My Great Grandmother's Apple Brown Betty

My mom & I had SO much fun making Apple Brown Betty this fall! Watch the entire video below!

INGREDIENTS:

6 granny smith (or other tart) apples. Peeled and sliced thin.
Orange juice
Cinnamon & Nutmeg
All Purpose Flour
Salted butter
Brown sugar

STEPS:

  1. Cube butter and leave in fridge 2 hours prior to baking
  2. Pour 1/4 cup orange juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg into deep cooking dish
  3. Peel & thinly slice 4 cups of apples (about 5-6 apples), adding to baking dish & mixing to marinate as you go
  4. Make Syrup: Melt 2 TBS butter, add 2 TBS warm orange juice, and 1/2 cup of brown sugar. Mix until it forms a syrup
  5. Pour syrup over apples and mix well until apples look coated
  6. Into the food processor, add 2/3 cup lightly packed brown sugar, 1/2 cup (1 stick) of cubed chilled unsalted butter, 2 tsp cinnamon, 1 cup all purpose flour, 1/4 tsp salt
  7. Blend mixture in food processor by pulsing - don't pulse too much, as you still need to keep butter together in the size of peas. You could also use a pastry blender.
  8. Place in oven at 350 degrees for about 30-45 mins.

This is what the edges of the dish look like when it's done. Bubbling and happy.

To place, just scoop and top with your favorite ice cream! Buttered Pecan is said to be the best with Apple Brown Betty, but I'm partial to vanilla bean.

Enjoy Ronald Reagan's favorite dessert!
